PC index of Geomagnetic Activity

PC index (from Polar Cap) characterizes the geomagnetic disturbances in the polar cap caused by the action of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field on the Earth's magnetosphere.

PC index is calculated separately for the northern and southern hemisphere by the geomagnetic data of one station, located near the polar cap.
For the Northern Hemisphere PCN, the index is calculated from the data of Thule Station (Thule (Qaanaaq) - THL) located in Greenland. For the Southern Hemisphere PCS, the index is calculated from the data of Vostok Station (VOS) in Antarctica.

The index was put into practice in the mid-70s of the 20th century. PC index was calculated for a 15-minute and 1-minute intervals of time.

In 2013 International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA Resolution No. 3, 2013) recommended the international scientific community to use the PC index. A new index of magnetic activity PC was introduced and studied by O.Troshichev and V.Andrezen [1, 2].
The procedure for determining the index provides on-line calculation of PCN and PCS regardless of time, season and solar cycle.

The PCN index is calculated and made available by Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), Russian Federation and DTU Space - National Space Institute, Denmark from data collected at magnetic observatories.

Definitive minute values of PCN index from 1975 in in IAGA2002 format.
