ASY and SYM Indices of Geomagnetic Activity
ASY long-asymmetric and SYM symmetric indices are introduced to describe
perturbations of the geomagnetic field in the middle latitudes with a high temporal resolution (1 minute).
The values of these magnetic indices are determined by one-minute values of H and D components
of the geomagnetic field: for components in the horizontal (dipole pole) direction H (SYM-H, ASY-H)
and in the orthogonal (east-west) direction D (SYM-D, ASY-D).
The index SYM-H provides information on the behavior of a symmetrical ring current that surrounds the globe
along low latitudes. The magnetic index ASY-H is an asymmetric ring current obtained in the same way as
a symmetrical ring current.
ASY and SYM indices are calculated and published in the
(World Data Center for Geomagnetism, Kyoto).
