Report

ON SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY IN VOLCANOLOGY

1995-1999

Presented to the International Association

of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interiors

for the XX General Assembly

of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics

Preface

This report provides a general summary of volcanological studies in Russia for the period from 1995 to 1998. It is primarily the result of the efforts of some authors from the Institute of Volcanology, Far East Division of the Academy of Sciences, Russia.

During the quadrennium several volcanoes of Kamchatka and Kuril Islands erupted and were extensively studied. Among others, Klyuchevskoy, Bezymianny, Shiveluch and Karymsky should be mentioned.

One of the most interesting event of this time was simultaneous 1996 Karymsky Volcano and Academy of Sciences Caldera Eruption.

References connected with the description of the volcanic activities, physics of eruptive process was placed in section 1. Next sections of this document outline contributions to research related to volcanology in Russia during the past four years. This major part of the review is divided into three sections that represent more or less satisfactorily the general trends in a wide range of activities within the Russian volcanological community. Because we wanted to restrict this volume of this report we have decided to put emphasis on the bibliography of the published literature.

We believe that the publication lists inserted in this quadrennial report cover all principal references at least those western researchers may have access to. At the same time technical reports, preprints, part of abstracts of papers as well as a some number of papers with limited circulation inside our country have been eliminated. Part of the references cited here have been published in journals in Russian, but we put their English titles everywhere. Those papers marked by word (Russian). It is worth mentioning, however, that many principal Russian scientific journals are usually being translated into English and distributed in the West. Those are “Volcanology and Seismology” (Necessary to underline that numbers Russian and English version of the Journal “Volcanology and Seismology” are different.), “Doklady RAN”, “Geokhimia” (Geochemistry), “Geology and Geophysics”, and some others. This version of the report hasbeen carried out and typed by G.E.Bogoyavlenskaya and .I. L. Ototuyk.
